RIGA — The 11th International Riga Fashion Week took off on Wednesday. The biannual event organized by the Baltic Fashion Organization features spring / summer 2010 pret-a-porter collections from well know fashion designers from the baltic states, Ukraine, Russia and Spain.
“It may be because of the low rents, or simply because of the great inspiration of our artist. But despite the current crisis, there haven’t been more fashion boutiques as now in the city before,” said Elena Strahova, president of the Baltic Fashion Federation.
Inspiring words for a country referred to as the broken tiger due to the current crisis, and maybe the toughest message to learn for Latvians. Despite the harsh economic environment, people can do business.

From October 28 – 31, the fashion week is taking place at the Revel Hotel Riga and several other locations, featuring also Latvian fashion designer Indra Salcevicha (SALT)– who just returned from Germany where she received the first price in the Baltic Fashion Award for the most innovative designer concept.
Also Anna Led, Katya Shehurina, Alise Indriksone, Sheila and Kossmoss will present their Spring/Summer Collection. From Lithuania Diana Nevedomskyte and Diana Denissova are present, form Estonia Hanna Korsar. This year´s honoured guests are Max Chernitsov from Russia and Andre Tan, at the moment the most well known designer from Ukraine.
During a smaller then usual press conference, Elena Strahova invited to forget the present situation for a little while, “enjoy the flair of the fashion show, the parties, and presentations” she said.
The one-week program melted to a 4-day event, and a number of fashion bigwigs are missing this year, including one of Latvia’s most talented fashion designers Keita and Atis Artemjevs.
Favorite highlight of the Rigas Fashion Week, said Elena Strahova, will be the Fashion Gala Show on Saturday night. The famous Spanish fashion designer Roberto Verino, awarded by the King of Spain for his contribution to Spanish art, will then present his Spring/Summer Collection
